UUSHIGYN UVURYN DEER STONE

Uushigyn uvuryn deer stone

Located 18 kilometers west of Murun city, in the territory of Burentogtokh soum, there is a major complex of deer stone statues and cairn burial ritual structures on the slopes of Ulaan Uushig Mountain. This complex features around 30 deer stone statues positioned in a row from west to east, surrounded by numerous ritual sites in the form of enclosed and circular stone arrangements.

This monument is the largest collection of deer stone statues in the Eurasian steppe, making it significant in the study of the ancient peoples who carried the culture of cairns and deer stones.

The deer stones belong to the Mongolian-Transbaikal style, which is characterized by stylized representations of deer.

The shortest of the statues is 133 cm tall, while the tallest reaches 375 cm. The stones are made of light gray, reddish-brown, and bluish-gray granite. The carvings on the statues are preserved to varying degrees.

Among these statues, the most unique is one depicting a human face. On one side of this statue, at the top, the human face is intricately carved, featuring eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and ears, with an earring hanging from the ear.

Below the face, there is a necklace carved around the neck, and beneath it, 14 deer are depicted in a circular arrangement. Between the deer, five-sided shields and mirrors are included. Below the belt, 14 deer are carved as if reaching upward toward the sky.

The belt is decorated with a wall-like pattern, and it is adorned with weapons such as battle spears, chisels, knives, hooks, and sickles.
