REINDEER FAMILY (TSAATAN)
Reindeer family (Tsaatan)
The reindeer-rearing people called “Tsaatan”, who live only in Khuvsgul, also live here. Tsaatan is their word meaning “people with reindeer”. The Tsaatan tribe is very different from the Khalkha tribe, which is the main ethnic group of Mongolia, in terms of language and lifestyle. Their lives were originally hunting, but from the middle of the 20th century they became dependent on reindeer breeding and are now centered on reindeer nomadic life.
The dwelling called “Urts” is mobile, but it is fundamentally different from the Mongolian ger, and it uses 32 large dead pine trees and 22 to 25 medium-sized skeletons. It closely resembles the conical mobile dwelling Tipi, which is made and extends from Scandinavia to Siberia and even to the Americas. Currently, more than 30 families and about 500 reindeer. The Sayan Mountains, where they live, are still home to many wild reindeers. One of the few cash incomes is to cut off the reindeer horns, which are the raw material for Chinese herbs, and sell them to merchants who occasionally come to the village.
