LARCH TREE OF TUJ

Larch tree of Tuj

The Tujiin Nars Natural Complex is located in the Shaamar and Altanbulag soums of Selenge province, covering an area of 65,548.56 hectares. Unfortunately, it has been significantly damaged by the risks of wildfires and exploitation by those seeking profit. In recent years, restoration efforts have been carried out on approximately 7,500 hectares, resulting in 40-50% of the area naturally regenerating.

The Tujiin Nars area is unique in terms of its natural characteristics, located at the southeastern end of the Siberian Taiga and extending into the Khangai mountain range. The area is a coniferous forest of sandy soil in flat terrain, with larch being the dominant species. In the past, it was said that the forest was so dense that it was impossible to walk through, and the sound of the prairie wind could not be heard within the forest. However, this larch forest recently reached the brink of destruction. To protect its ecosystem, the Tujiin Nars forest was placed under state protection by the Mongolian Parliament’s Resolution No. 39 in 2002. The area surrounding the Tujiin Nars natural complex is a steppe region with small foothills and undulating hills, located in the Orkhon-Selenge confluence area.
