SHILYN BOGD

Shilyn Bogd

Located 60 km east of Darynganga soum in Sukhbaatar province, this elevated area at 1,778 meters above sea level is home to around 200 extinct volcanoes, the highest of which is Mount Shiliin Bogd. The name “Bogd Uul” (Holy Mountain) is a later addition influenced by Buddhism, while historically, Mongols referred to it as “Shiveet Shil” and “Agshuun.” It has been revered as a sacred mountain by the people of the steppe.

In this area, there are about 60 human-shaped stone formations. The crater of Mount Shiliin Bogd extends to the southwest, with a mouth that is approximately 2 km wide and about 300 meters deep. From the top of Mount Shiliin Bogd, one can see around 200 ancient extinct volcanoes, including Zotol Khan and Dosh. The peaks of these mountains appear to have been deliberately shaped and trimmed, creating a stunning sight. The surrounding mountains, such as Avdar, Dosh, Senjit, and Atzaa, are named for their cone-shaped volcanic formations. Being the highest mountain in the vast steppe, it creates a conical shape that is visible from over 60 km away, resembling a tent on the horizon.
