KHURGYN VALLEY
Khurgun valley
Located 45 km east of the center of Darynganga soum, there are human-shaped stone statues in a narrow valley called Khorgiin Khandii, which runs from the west to the east. Local people named the valley Khorgiin Khandii after the statues. These statues date back to the 13th-14th century and are associated with the Mongols of that period. One of the most notable features of the Khorguud sculptures is that all of them are depicted sitting with some object resting on them, which distinguishes them from the Turkic human statues. Another common feature is the representation of rounded hats, some with a tassel on top, thick-framed or unframed, which is typical of 13th-14th century Eastern Mongolian portrait sculptures. In some of the statues, the “shibilger” hairstyle, a bundled and tied hairdo characteristic of the medieval Mongols, is also depicted.
What sets the human statues of Khorgiin Khandii apart from others is that most of them are portrayed with hats and boots but are otherwise depicted naked. They also show a bulging chest, and some of them feature male genitalia. These statues all hold goblet-shaped vessels with long handles in their right hands, a feature that is similar to other portrait statues from Eastern Mongolia. The statues are arranged on stone mounds, oriented toward the sunrise.
