OTGONTENGER MOUNTAIN
Otgontenger mountain
Mongolians have revered and worshipped the Otgontenger Khairkhan mountain since ancient times. Initially, it was worshipped by the Turks during the 6th to 8th centuries.
In 1779, the tradition of worship was revived but later forgotten. In 1911, Bogd Khan reintroduced annual Buddhist rituals to honor the mountain, but this too eventually ceased. However, in 1995, it was declared a state-sacred mountain, and a tradition was established to conduct ceremonies every four years. Otgontenger is the highest peak of the Khangai range, rising 4,021 meters above sea level.
The mountain is surrounded by dense forests, fast-flowing rivers, and abundant lakes. The nearby mountains are noted for their unique natural formations and host a rich biosphere and ecosystem with rare plants and animals. It is also renowned for its mineral springs and spa resorts. The Bogdin River, which flows from its northern side, enhances its significance.
Located at the borders of Otgon, Tsagaan Khairkhan, and Aldarkhaan soums of Zavkhan province, it is 78 km from the provincial capital to the Otgon resort and 65 km from Otgon soum to the Badarkhundaga Lake at the foot of the mountain. Last year, the sacred Otgontenger Khairkhan ceremony was held with more than 20,000 participants.
