ONGI TEMPLE

Ongi temple

Ongi Temple is located in Saihan ovoo County, the province. The two temples on the north and south sides of the Ongi River are collectively called the Ongi Temple. It is considered to be one of the largest temples in Mongolia. Ongi Temple was built in 1660. At that time, the site was huge with about 30 temples and 4 large temples. It is also said that there were about 1000 monks. During the socialist era, Onggi Temple was viewed as taboo and was completely destroyed in 1939. Many monks were victims of the Great Purge. After democratization, several monks returned to the temple and began talking about Buddhism. Currently, one temple has been completely rebuilt. Traces of temples still remain around the temple. The Ongi archaeological site is located approximately 18 km south of the village of Saikan Ovoo.
