MOTHER MOUNTAIN

Mother mountain

Eej Khairkhan Mountain is located at the intersection of Tsogt, Altai, and Tsetseg soums in Gobi-Altai aimag, situated between the Mongol Altai and Gobi Altai mountain ranges. It rises to an elevation of 2,274 meters above sea level and is 1,120 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.

“Nine Craters” of Eej Khairkhan Mountain. These nine craters are a series of rock depressions on the eastern slope of Eej Khairkhan, lined up from north to south. Each crater contains water, and during wetter years, the water flows from one crater to the next. The first four craters are smaller, with diameters of about 1-3 meters, and are separated by 40-50 cm high stone thresholds. The fourth crater has dried up and is now filled with silt, where reeds and bamboo have begun to grow.

The fifth to eighth craters are relatively larger, around 5-6 meters in diameter, and remain filled with water throughout the year, with depths ranging from 2 to 8 meters. The ninth crater is about 7-8 meters away from the others, and in rainy years, its overflow creates a small spring that flows along the rocks.

All nine craters share a common origin, likely formed by natural cracks in the granite.

Near the eighth crater, a large willow tree grows on a rocky ledge, which has been revered by locals since ancient times, with offerings of khadag (prayer scarves) and prayers.

Another point of interest for nature enthusiasts and travelers near the nine craters is a rock formation known as the “Pig’s Head Rock.”
