SUTAI KHAIRKHAN
Suthai khairkhan
Sutai Khairkhan is the southernmost permanently snow-capped peak of the Altai Mountains, stretching 60 kilometers across the borders of Darvi and Tonkhil soums in Gobi-Altai aimag, and Darvi and Tsetseg soums in Khovd aimag, Mongolia. The name “Sutai” comes from the Turkic words “Su” and “Tau,” meaning “Mountain with Water.”
Its highest peak, Tsast Bogd, stands at 4,090 meters above sea level.
According to ancient legends, Sutai Khairkhan was once part of the Himalayas and separated to form a section of the Altai range, growing to the east of Baatar Khairkhan Mountain. In ancient times, it was known as the “Mountain with Water,” which later evolved into the name Sutai Khairkhan. Legend also suggests that in the past, people domesticated wild oxen from this mountain and used their milk in daily life, leading to the mountain being called “Milk Mountain.” Since 2008, Sutai Khairkhan has been designated a sacred mountain and has an annual ceremony at the Great Ovoo. It is located 1,016 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar.
