MOJOO CAVE PAINTING

Mojoo cave painting

This site is located at the head of the Tsagaan River in the Sagil soum of Uvs Province. It dates back to the Neolithic period and is famous not only in Mongolia but also worldwide for its remarkable rock paintings. The depictions include argali sheep, ibex, camels, dogs, cattle, and humans, and like the paintings in the Northern Blue Cave, they hold significant historical value. One of the depictions shows a human drawing a bow and shooting at a bull or leading it. In a prominent section of the Mojo Rock, several cattle are illustrated, with a large, majestic bull with massive horns and a beautiful body prominently displayed in the center.

Among the common symbols in these rock paintings, there is a “circular, oval-shaped indentation” representing animal fertility, which is often seen in other similar depictions.

This heritage site is classified as a “Rock Art and Inscriptions” monument, a type of immovable historical and cultural monument. It was included in the “List of Historical and Cultural Monuments under State Protection” by the Mongolian Government Resolution No. 13 in 2020.
