GOLDEN SAND
Golden sand
The eastern part of the Böreg Deli sand dunes in the Uvs Lake Basin is called the Golden Sands. It covers an area of 177,500 hectares. The region is protected by the state to preserve its freshwater streams, springs, rich grasslands, shifting sands, ancient animal remains, and historical monuments, all of which remain unaffected by external influences.
The origin of the Golden Sands is linked to both lacustrine (lake) and proluvial (river fan) deposits from the Quaternary period, combined with the accumulation driven by winds from the northwest. It is also associated with the weathering of the underlying bedrock. The dominant vegetation consists of mosses, lichen, and various grasses, including the sand-dune plant communities. This area is home to plants such as wormwood, wild thyme, sagebrush, and white poplar. Along the sand’s northern edge, there are areas with growth of pine, larch, and sea buckthorn.
The fauna includes animals like the steppe fox, hare, marmot, wildcat, and snow leopard. Depending on the season, various waterfowl also visit and stay in the area. The Golden Sands region features rolling hills, with notable low mountains such as Erdenetolgoi, Zalaa Tolgoi, and Khukh Tolgoi, located in the eastern part of the dunes. These hills and the overall terrain are indicative of the sandy landscape.
