KHYARGAS LAKE

Khyargas lake

Khyrgas soums in the Uvs province, in the Great Lakes Depression, on the southern slope of the Khankhukhii Mountain Range. The lake’s surface area is 1407 square kilometers, with a maximum length of 75 kilometers, a width of 31 kilometers, and an average width of 19 kilometers. The water surface is at an elevation of 1028 meters above sea level. Hyrgas Lake is a closed lake with no outflow, and its water surface is highly saline, containing dissolved salts due to evaporation.

Khetsuu Khad (Difficult Cliff) is located 230 kilometers east of the provincial center and 60 kilometers from Zavkhan soum, on the eastern side of Hyrgas Lake. It is a 20-meter high cliff that stretches 5-7 kilometers underwater. Some of its peaks emerge from the water, creating an island-like appearance. The peaks that rise above the water serve as a haven for waterfowl, which build their nests and lay eggs there. Russian tourist A.V. Burdukov wrote in his notes, “Khetsuu Khad is a unique natural formation and is second only to the most beautiful in Mongolia.”

In Hyrgas Lake, fish species such as the Altai stickleback, Osman, Mongolian whitefish, and sturgeon are abundant, and they are the main food source for the birds nesting on Khetsuu Khad. The path to Khetsuu Khad is characterized by loose sand and soft ground, making it suitable for traveling by vehicles with a bridge.
