MENEN STEPPE
Menen Steppe
The Menen Steppe, located in the vast plains of Eastern Mongolia, is the largest flat plain in the country. Its terrain is level, with a slope of no more than 10 m/km. Menen Steppe stretches over 90 km westward from Buira Lake, covering an area approximately 60 km wide and situated at an elevation of 600 meters.
The steppe is rich in grazing vegetation and is home to gazelles, wolves, and rare wildlife, preserving its natural state as one of the largest untouched plains on Earth. Menen Steppe is a vast feather grassland dotted with small hills, bordered by the watersheds of the Nomrog and Khalkh Rivers.
Menen Steppe is one of the main grazing grounds for the Mongolian gazelle, with hundreds of gazelles gathering here each winter. The scenic view of the feather grasslands, covered in perennial grasses, resembles a sea of green, which can be admired in Menen. Protecting this native steppe ecosystem, along with the large herds of gazelles, is of global importance due to its relatively preserved natural state.
