BUIR LAKE
Buir Lake
Buira Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake located in the eastern part of Mongolia, in Dornod Province. This lake borders China and is considered one of Mongolia’s deepest lakes, connecting on its eastern side with Hulun Lake.
The area surrounding Buira Lake is rich in various bird species and types of fish, attracting the interest of wildlife enthusiasts, environmentalists, travelers, and researchers. During the summer, visitors go to the lake to relax, swim, fish, and enjoy the scenic beauty, making it a popular destination for tourism. The picturesque plains and vast grasslands around the lake also showcase the unique character of Mongolia’s steppe landscape.
On the southern shore of Buira Lake, there are sand ridges, 3-5 meters high, created by wave action, and small lakes sometimes form between them, some of which connect to the main lake. The eastern and northern shores have high terraces, where the Khalkh River flows in and the Orshuun River flows out. Dense growths of willows and reeds cover the shoreline.
The water level of Buira Lake fluctuates throughout the year depending on precipitation and the inflow of tributaries. The lake releases its excess water into Hulun Lake via the Orshuun River. In the southwestern corner of Buira Lake, a small stream called Holboo used to flow into Bayan Lake, though now it only flows in years of heavy rainfall.
Buira Lake is among the purest freshwater lakes. Its waters contain ions such as bicarbonate, chloride, sodium, and calcium, classifying it as a bicarbonate-chloride type lake.
