GREAT BURKHANT

Great Burkhant

One of Mongolia’s major historical and cultural monuments, Ikh Burkhant, is located 35 kilometers north of Sumber, the center of Khalkhgol soum in Dornod Province, on a 35-degree slope of the Khalkh River’s western bank. Known as “The Great Deity” or “Ikh Burkhant,” this monument was initiated and led by Togtokhtör Bat-Ochir (To Van) of the Halh’s Setsen Khan Province from 1859 to 1864.

This figure of the deity Jigjidjav Janraisag, the Savior from Eight Dangers, was created by To Van, along with local nobles and dignitaries of the Setsen Khan Province. They decided to carve the deity in a reclining position, funded by donations from the province and surrounding areas. Nearly 100 craftsmen were involved in constructing the monument, which measures 90 cubits or about 30 meters. It is set within two concentric circles: the larger circle is 220 by 97 meters, containing 20 horizontal inscriptions measuring an average of 165 by 110 centimeters. Inside the smaller circle, there are 12 stupas about 200 by 110 centimeters, surrounded by over 20 small carved stone figures of the deity.

Unfortunately, this magnificent monument faced destruction toward the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries during disruptions associated with the Eastern Chinese Railway. Further damage occurred after the People’s Revolution, as anti-religious suppression led to parts of the monument being used as construction materials for building foundations and livestock pens. However, between 1995 and 1997, restoration efforts were carried out with thorough research and excavation. In the fall of 1997, the Janraisag deity was restored and consecrated, enabling this cultural and historical marvel from the 19th century to be preserved for future generations as a tangible heritage site.
