BURKHAN KHALDUN MOUNTAIN

Burkhan Khaldun mountain

Mount Burkan Khaldun is a mountain located in the Khentii Mountains of Khentii Province in Mongolia. It is believed to be the birthplace of Genghis Khan and is said to be the site of his tomb, according to legend. It is a revered mountain for Mongolians. Historically, the mountain was called “Khaldun Khairkhan,” but later, under the influence of Buddhism, the name evolved to “Burkan Khaldun.” Prior to the Buddhist influence, Mongols did not use the term “Burkan” (meaning “god” in Mongolian), so there is no dispute over this change.

Mount Burkan Khaldun is covered with dense forests on its northern slopes, while the summit is sparsely wooded and features the delicate plants of the taiga. The mountain is home to three ovoos (sacred cairns): one at the base, one in the middle, and one at the summit. The lower ovoo is located at the foot of the mountain, and the middle ovoo is in the midsection of the mountain. The peak of the mountain is a large, flat, and expansive area. In the center of this plateau is a large, almost human-made platform that resembles an overturned dish. The top of the mountain, which is higher than a ten-story building, is crowned with a conical-shaped ovoo.

It takes about two hours to reach the middle ovoo from the lower ovoo, riding a good horse.
