KHAN BAYANZURKH MOUNTAIN

Khan Bayanzurkh mountain

Beside the monastery stands the “Mountain of Wishes” (or “Black Mountain of Wishes”), with two ascending paths and two resting spots. After climbing about 100 meters from the mountain’s base, one reaches a small temple. This is the designated spot for women, children, and the elderly to perform their rituals dedicated to this sacred mountain. Meanwhile, men continue their ascent to the ritual peak, where they walk around the sacred cairn at the summit, make their wishes, and whisper their prayers.

Locals have worshipped this mountain, formally known as Khan Bayanzurkh, since ancient times. It is also known by various names, such as Wish Mountain, Black Mountain, and Burial Mountain. The summit cairn used to be adorned with sacred ornaments, such as spirit vessels, flags, khadag scarves, and prosperity banners. Before 1930, the top of the cairn featured a crown decorated with precious stones, resembling the headdress of a khan. “Khan” is an honorary title given to this mountain; researchers note that approximately 120 mountains across Mongolia bear titles like Khan, Bogd, Gun, Beel, Beis, and Zaisan, reflecting their revered status.
