Khuvsgul lake<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Called “Switzerland in Mongolia,” is the largest freshwater lake in Mongolia near the Russian border. The river that flows out of the lake flows into Lake Baikal in the north. The lake surrounded by coniferous trees is said to be the second most transparent lake in the world (more than 20m), and it reflects the blue of the sky and shines brilliantly. Flowers bloom on the carpet of grass in the summer, and the trees turn golden in the fall.
To visit this lake, take a small plane from Ulaanbaatar to the town of Murun. From this town, take a jeep to the north on a road without a road for about 3 hours. There are 96 tributaries from Lake Khuvsgul, but only one “Egiin” river joins the Selenge River and flows into Lake Baikal in Russia. Lake Khuvsgul is 136 kilometers long, 262 meters wide and 1645 meters above sea level.
All accommodations are located to the west of the lake, so you can enjoy the sunrise from the lake. At night, you can hear the sound of the lake and you will see a different side of the meadow from Mongolia.

Reindeer Tsaatan<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Tsaatan, a reindeer-herding tribe found only in Khuvsgul Province, are also found here. Tsaatan means “reindeer-owning people” in their language. The Tsaatan people differ significantly in language and lifestyle from the Khalkha people, the majority ethnic group in Mongolia. Originally, their lifestyle revolved around hunting, but since the mid-20th century, they have become dependent on reindeer herding and now primarily live a nomadic reindeer lifestyle. Their<\/span>
portable dwellings, called “urts,” are fundamentally different from Mongolian-style gers. They are constructed of a frame made of 32 large, 3-4.5-meter-tall, dead larch trees, and 22-25 medium-sized ones. They closely resemble the tepees, conical portable dwellings found in Scandinavia, Siberia, and even the Americas. Currently, some 500 Tsaatan people, consisting of over 30 families, herd approximately 500 reindeer. The Sayan Mountains where they live are still home to many wild reindeer, and their only source of cash income comes from cutting off reindeer antlers once a year, which are used as ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine, and selling them to merchants who occasionally visit the village.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Khuvsgul is famous for its fishing tours. The fishing season begins in mid-August. Serious fishing enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that they can enjoy fishing at Lake Khuvsgul while abroad. You can rent a full set of fishing equipment locally, travel to the fishing spot by car with a licensed local instructor, and enjoy fishing to your heart’s content.
