AGLAG BUTEELYN MONASTERY
Gungarut Nature Reserve is a protected area of significant natural, historical, and cultural importance. It has been under special protection since 2003 and has successfully implemented wildlife and community-based tourism conservation projects, making it a prominent ecotourism destination in Mongolia.
The Kherlen River is a popular destination for rafters, kayakers, fishermen, and birdwatchers. Its banks are home to many endangered bird species, and the river itself is home to 38 species of fish, including taimen and lenok.
The Beit Berk Mountains provide a crucial habitat for globally endangered wild sheep and other animals such as wolves, marmots, and lynx. The wild sheep population in the area is estimated at around 300, and herds can often be seen by visitors. The region is also home to many marmots, locally called tarbagan.
The lake and wetlands support a wide variety of rare birds, including Siberian cranes, white-tailed eagles, swan geese, ruddy shelducks, and more. Visitors can enjoy fishing, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, mountain trekking, and cycling trips, making the area a diverse destination for both domestic and international tourists.
