HOMESTAY

Stay with Nomad Gers, take care of livestock, and help make dairy products to see the nomads’ day-to-day work with you. You can ride a horse with nomads, cross rivers, cross hills and take care of livestock. Horseback riding is unlimited. Free action is also possible. For dinner, you can enjoy a Mongolian traditional meal with your family and experience the homestay of nomads.
Life with few things like water, electricity, and gas. The lives of nomads change with the seasons of nature. If you choose the time of visit, you can experience the nomadic life of that time. Things that are easy in other countries are difficult in Mongolia, and they are surprised by the light of the candle flame.
Please enjoy the nomadic life!

A homestay will be held by the nomadic family’s ger, who is grazing sheep, goats, cows, and horses living in the nearby grassland, which has moved about an hour by private car from Ulaanbaatar. The attraction of this season is that you can spend a relaxing time with your family just because winter is a busy nomadic job. The cold outside is severe, but the inside of the round ger is hot, and it gets warm quickly with a stove that burns animal droppings. It is a tour that you can feel the wisdom of living in such a meadow.

Traditional Mongolian Ger (Yurt) Experience

Day-to-Day Life with Nomads

Adventure and Nature Exploration

  • Gers are traditional round tents made of felt and wood, commonly used by Mongolian nomads. Staying in a ger is a central part of the homestay experience. These gers are typically equipped with basic furniture, warm bedding, and stoves for heating during colder months.
  • Most Mongolian families will host you in these gers, offering a cozy and comfortable stay while experiencing the traditional nomadic way of life.
  • Rural Communities: You’ll live alongside local herders and get involved in their daily routines, such as tending to livestock (horses, cattle, sheep, and goats), milking animals, and even helping with the making of traditional dairy products like airag (fermented mare’s milk) or byaslag (yogurt).
  • Cultural Practices: You might have the chance to learn about traditional Mongolian crafts, like felt-making or wood carving, and hear stories about Mongolia’s history and folklore.
  • Meals: Food is an essential part of Mongolian hospitality. Traditional meals often include buuz (steamed dumplings), mutton, and milk tea. Depending on the region, you may also taste unique foods like khorkhog (meat cooked with hot stones) or tsuivan (noodles with vegetables and meat).
  • Horseback Riding: Mongolians have a deep connection with horses, and many homestay tours offer opportunities for horseback riding through Mongolia’s stunning landscapes, such as the vast steppes, hills, or along the edges of deserts.
  • Trekking and Hiking: Depending on the region, you can go hiking in areas like the Altai Mountains, the Gobi Desert, or the Khangai Mountains. These treks offer incredible views of rugged landscapes and abundant wildlife.
  • Wildlife Watching: Depending on the location of the homestay, you may have the chance to spot unique animals like przewalski’s horses, wolves, bears, and eagles.

Tour Logistics

.

  • Guided Tours: Many homestay tours in Mongolia are guided, which helps with navigating the remote areas and providing translation between you and the family.
  • Accommodation: Depending on your preferences and budget, homestay tours can vary from basic stays in traditional gers to more comfortable setups with modern amenities in certain areas, especially near major tourist destinations.
  • Remote Regions: Many homestay experiences are based in remote parts of Mongolia, so prepare for long drives over rugged roads. Some tours combine multiple homestays, allowing you to experience different regions of the country.
  • If your visit aligns with local festivals, like the Naadam Festival (held in July), you could witness traditional Mongolian sports like wrestling, horse racing, and archery. Your hosts may involve you in these celebrations or explain the cultural significance behind them.
  • Shamanic Rituals: Some tours include visits to local shamans or spiritual sites where you can observe ancient rituals or even participate in ceremonies that honor the natural world.

Tips for a Successful Homestay Tour

  • Respect Local Customs: Mongolian culture is rich in tradition. Be respectful of local customs, such as greeting elders, removing your shoes when entering a ger, and always accepting tea when offered.
  • Pack Accordingly: The weather in Mongolia can be unpredictable, so bring warm clothing even in summer months, as temperatures can drop significantly at night.
  • Cash & Bartering: It’s useful to carry cash in Mongolian tugrik for small purchases or tips, as some areas may not accept credit cards.
