GUNGALUUT - STEPPE NOMADS

The tourist camp is located about 130 km east of Ulaanbaatar, approximately a 2-hour drive. The route includes 113 km of paved road and 17 km across open steppe, and it is about 110 km (90 minutes) from Chinggis Khaan International Airport. The area offers everything Mongolia is known for—vast grasslands, gentle hills, rivers, horses, and traditional yurts. Although close to Ulaanbaatar, the surroundings feel completely remote and peaceful. Steppe Nomads Camp is a highly recommended accommodation, providing an authentic Mongolian experience with stays in traditional nomadic yurts, horseback riding, and premium service in the open grasslands. There are no artificial structures around the camp, preserving the natural landscape. For safety, the camp and restrooms are softly lit at night, while nearby hills offer perfect spots to enjoy the starry sky. The 360-degree panoramic views allow guests to experience stunning sunrise, sunset, and night skies. The camp features some of the cleanest shower and restroom facilities in Mongolia, with separate Western-style toilets for men and women, hot and cold running water, and showers. The restaurant serves high-quality Mongolian and European cuisine, prepared by professional chefs, along with cold local beer and juices. Horseback riding is a highlight of the stay. Even beginners can ride comfortably with guidance from experienced horse owners. Guests may enjoy scenic rides across the hills, visit nearby nomadic families for tea, and explore the endless grasslands at a relaxed pace.

An astounding number of bird species have been sighted and registered in Gungarut – 156 species to be exact – making the area a beloved destination for local and international birdwatchers. Gazing at the endangered White-naped Crane, the symbol of Gungarut Nature Reserve, as it saunters peacefully amongst them is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Threatened species such as the Siberian Crane, Common Crane, Hooded Crane and Dalmatian Pelican are globally endangered, while endangered species such as the Rufous Shelduck, Relict Gull, Grey Heron and Black Stork are commonly seen. Occasional sightings

Course code: 03 Camping day trip, visit to nomadic ger and horse riding experience

One of the favorite activities for visitors to the Gunga Route is riding a Mongolian horse through the rolling green grasslands. Riders experience such joy as they cross high mountains and seas to reach destinations inaccessible by vehicle. As part of our community-based tourism activities, we have worked closely with local nomadic families for many years. They provide excellent support during horse trekking, including comfortable saddles and gentle horses. Protective helmets and spurs can also be borrowed from the camp, and experienced instructors can be provided by local families. Livestock grazing is also available, but horseback riding is unlimited.

Course code: 04 Camping day trip Rafting tour on the Hellen River

A boat ride on the tranquil Helern River, observing the wildlife and nomadic life that flourishes along the river, is an unparalleled experience. Therefore, we highly recommend spending a day on a boat to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Gungarut. You can rent an 8-person raft, 2-person and 1-person kayaks from the friendly camp manager. Fishing on the river is also available upon request. If you wish, you can try lure fishing.

Course code: 05 Camping day trip Fishing tour

Lenok and grayling are among the most common fish species found in the Kherlen River. Additionally, other common fish species include taimen, pike, false asp, Asian carp, Amur huchen, Prussian carp, burbot, and catfish. Visitors can fish in the Kherlen River all year round, except from May 30th to September 15th. From early spring to autumn, the Kherlen River is most rich in fish, making it an excellent destination for fishermen.

Course code: 06 Camping departure and arrival day walking tour/trekking tour

We are not exaggerating when we say this. The Gungar Route offers a huge variety of landscapes in a relatively small area, from high mountains, small hills and rolling green grasslands to the mighty Kherlen River, numerous streams, ponds and marshes. Not to mention the amazing wildlife that can be spotted on the trek. The reserve is well protected by local rangers, so even one or two people will feel safe. Enjoy a solo walk.
