BICHIGT ROCK

At the head of the Khuitnii River, the Mongolian square writing on the rock cover of Bichigt khoshuu are written in Chinese black ink, and some of the words cannot be read in full, but the general meaning of the writing is: “Under the power of the everlasting sky and the mightiness of Great Khaan an event has been written down and kept as a memory, Lunar calendar 8th day of September in Year of Hen …” Besides, there is an ochre painting of a flying bird, people, and many dots in the square, which might show the human and animal census.
The Brahmi script inscription on the Khuis Tolgoi monument dates back approximately 1,400 years to around AD 601, originating in what is now Mongolia. In 1967, a team led by D. Tsende from the Language and Literature Institute of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences discovered three stone monuments with unknown inscriptions in Khuis Tolgoi, in the Mungun soum of Bulgan Province. In 1972, M. Shinekhüü, a research associate at the Institute of History, documented the find and identified the script as ancient Brahmi. In 2014, a team of international scholars, led by D. Maue from Germany, successfully deciphered the inscription, revealing Brahmi characters representing sounds in the Mongolian language. Scholars believe that the Khuis Tolgoi inscription was erected during the early period of the Turkic Khaganate as a dedication to a royal ritual.
